Many describe the Bahamas as '"a country made up of 700 islands", but it is so much more than that. My idea of the Bahamas is not only the sunshine, the beach, the ocean.. it is also the people, the amazing food, the lively culture, and the feeling you get when being here. When people asked what it was like to live in the Bahamas, I always replied with "... perfect." I feel as though going away to school made me appreciate living here even more. I always loved the feeling I got once the plane would touch down and I would have "Boom Pine-Apple Wine" blasting through my headphones. After leaving the airport, my first stop would always be at Cafe Johnny Canoe or the Fish Fry, as I had craved Bahamian food for so long. I then surrounded myself with family and friends, noticing that Bahamian accent slip back in once or twice. So, it is the feeling of this island that I love the most. Everyday when I wake up, I look outside and think, "wow.. this is paradise." It truly is better in the Bahamas.

Interview with Amanda Appleyard

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE MISS BAHAMAS UNIVERSE COMPETITION?
I joined the Miss Bahamas Universe competition because I want to be a role model and big sister to the youth of the Bahamas, as this is very important for them to have. I want to let them know that leading a good and healthy life will surely benefit them when they become adults, and I want to show everyone that I can represent the Bahamas in the best way possible.

IF YOU WERE TO BECOME MISS BAHAMAS 2009, WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST THING THAT YOU WOULD DO?
Scream!!!! Then, I would love to go around to different schools in the Bahamas, to speak with all of the young adults. I would like to introduce myself and let them know how much I would love to be involved in their lives, and this way, they could better understand who I a truly am.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL THING THAT HAS HAPPEN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE?
I think I experience unusual things in every day life! Yet, something that I am very happy about is overcoming the fear I had of boarding school in Canada. I had never left my parents for more than a week at the most, so when I walked off to my first class ever, with my new friends and make up piled on, they were very suprised to not see me in tears. I don't even think I gave them a good bye hug! However, after 3 weeks, the slumber party was over for me. I called them 24/7 in tears, begging them to let me come home. The funny thing is that once I came home for Christmas Break, I couldn't wait to get back to school! Ever since then, I loved every moment of it. It was the greatest experience; I did some many things I never thought I 'd do. I went skiing, snowboarding, camping; I even became the only islander on the ice hockey team! I made friends that I will keep for a lifetime, and memories I will cherish forever.

DO YOU THINK THE SWIMSUIT CONTEST AT BEAUTY PAGEANTS DEGRADES WOMEN?
I do not think that the swimsuit contest is degrading to women, however, I do wish that body type was not such a big issue. Many women inherit fuller bodies, yet that doesn't make them less beautiful than a skinnier woman. Beauty comes also from within.

GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOUR NATIONAL COSTUME WILL BE AND WHAT DOES IT REPRESENTS?
It's a suprise! However, I can assure you that it is extremely original.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO AS MISS BAHAMAS 2009?
Firstly, I would like to bring many Bahamian children out of their shells, in the sense that I would love for them to communicate with the rest of the Bahamas. I think it is important that they share their fears, hopes and dreams with other children in the Bahamas, as well as adults, as children are the future.

Secondly, I would like to help the children that are less fortunate than many of us today. I would love to get as much help as possible in providing clothing, food, shelther and schooling for them.

Thirdly, my dream is to start a radio talk show! A show that would be directed to young adults here in the Bahamas, that could call in when in need of advice, or just someone to talk to. I would discuss things that I know are experienced in many teenage lives, as I have gone through them as well.

IF YOU HAD TO RESIDE ON ONE OF THE FAMILY ISLANDS IN THE BAHAMAS, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
A few months ago, I travelled to Harbor Island in Eleuthera for the first time. The moment I stepped on that pink sand, and looked out to nothing but blue water, my worries felt as though they had disappeared. I couldn't do anything but smile as I stared at the beauty. Being on that beach felt refreshing, and it was a true reminder that I live on an amazing island.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR AND WHY?
For as long as I can remember, my two favorite colors have been blue and yellow. It could be my loyalty to the Bahamas, but I also believe it is because of boarding school in Canada. Walking to and from class in the freezing cold made me so excited to get home for breaks and summer, because I would be seeing that bright Bahama sun, and beautiful ocean, once again.

TELL VIEWERS A LITTLE ABOUT THE BAHAMAS AND WHY YOU LOVE IT SO!
